The second dominant tenet in the Puritan ethos designated social welfare, the good of the many, as a goal ever to be held in mind.  Here again the contemporary scientists adopted an objective prescribed by the current values.  Science was to be fostered and nurtured as leading to the domination of Nature by technologic invention.  The Royal Society, we are told by its worthy historian, "does not intend to stop at some particular benefit, but goes to the root of all noble inventions."  (1968, p. 631).
